2002
In March of 2002, the District presented Phase I of the Blueprint for a Bright Future: Where We Are Today, which provided a summary report of 13 areas of responsibility and opportunity. The District used this report as a strategic plan to make improvements in all areas.
2006
In November of 2006, an updated synopsis of the Blueprint for a Bright Future was presented to the Board of Education. Since the original report, almost all issues were addressed, except the physical conditions of the District’s school buildings.
2007
In May 2007, the Citizens' Facilities Planning Committee—a long-range planning committee—convened with thirteen community members, two board members and utilized the resources of District administration and professional consultants, including architects, engineers, demographers and financial advisors. Their mission was to evaluate existing information regarding the physical conditions of the buildings, enrollment projections of the District, and develop a comprehensive list of needs to be resolved related to the buildings. The committee toured buildings to understand the issues of each school and identified educational and safety needs—defined as "essential for survival"— for each building. The committee recognized that building needs were increasing and identified how to accommodate students with appropriate facilities.
In October 2007, the Citizens' Facilities Planning Committee presented its recommendations to the St. Anthony-New Brighton Board of Education. The Board evaluated the recommendations and developed a direction for how to best address the concerns.
2008
The proposed referendum—in the form of four questions—was approved by the Board for voter approval on May 20th.
On May 20th, voters approved Question One of the referendum. Voters approved deferred maintenance projects and needed renovations to educational spaces. The projects resulting from this question include:
- A new Computer lab at Wilshire Park
- Updated Science and Computer labs at Middle/High School
- Renovation of Special Education area at Middle/High School to provide appropriate space to meet needs of the program
- Middle/High school kitchen will be expanded with new equipment to adequately serve the student population
- Separating bus traffic from parent drop off at the Middle/High school
- Exterior improvements including new roofs, window and door repair
- Replacement of flooring, casework, equipment and electrical improvements
Improvements will also be made to the HVAC systems to improve air quality and building ventilation at Wilshire Park and Middle/High Schools. These improvements qualified as a health and safety concern, did not need approval from the voters and will be levied to our residents.
