Groundbreaking Ceremony

Over fifty community members, parents and student representatives attended St. Anthony-New Brighton School District’s groundbreaking ceremony on Monday, April 27. Speakers included Dr. Rod Thompson, Superintendent; Jane Eckert, Vice Chair of School Board; Tom Keith, Principal of St. Anthony Village High School and Chris Gulachek, parent. Student representatives from Wilshire Park included Max Kachman, Kindergarten; Khadijah Dibba, 1st grade; Ruby Garthune, 2nd grade; Derrick Rabine, 3rd grade; Christopher Kim, 4th grade and Madelyn Wald, 5th grade. Student representatives from St. Anthony Middle School included Milcah Elias, 6th grade; Andrew Himmer, 7th grade and Addie Collins, 8th grade. Student representatives from St. Anthony Village High School included Nate Snyder, 9th grade; Sessen Mengist-Teklay, 10th grade; Devin Ferguson, 11th grade and Bich-Quyen Bui, 12th grade.

The ceremony signified the start of construction and renovation projects that will occur at Wilshire Park and St. Anthony Middle/High School during the summers of 2009 and 2010. The projects include:

A new computer lab at Wilshire Park
Updated science and computer labs at Middle/High School
Renovation of special education classroom area at Middle/High School
Food service expansions and upgrades at Middle/High School
Separating bus traffic from parent drop off at Middle/High school
Exterior improvements including new roofs, window and door repair
Replacement of flooring, casework, equipment
Electrical and bathroom improvements
Indoor Air Quality improvements at Wilshire Park and Middle/High School

Dr. Rod Thompson, superintendent, welcomed attendees to the groundbreaking ceremony.

Jane Eckert, School Board Vice Chair, shared comments on behalf of Representative Mindy Greiling and Senator John Marty and thanked the community for their continued support of St. Anthony-New Brighton schools.

Tom Keith, principal of St. Anthony Village High School, highlighted the significant teaching and learning opportunities that will be possible as a result of the renovations.

Chris Gulachek, St. Anthony Middle School parent, acknowledged the efforts of students, parents, community members, volunteers, teachers,administrators and School Board members in sustaining high-performing schools.
